Oddly enough …

You know what is funny? In the past few months I have lost my Canadian patriotism.

I cannot understand why I feel this way. I am very privileged to live in a place that offers (almost) free health care, more freedom to travel (Cuba) and Kinder Surprise. However, with the introduction to family and friends in other parts of the world, I think I am getting to be more an Earth supporter rather than a CanCon supporter.

I may have ruffled a few feathers. I am not sorry. I am proud to be from Canada, but I do not feel attached like I used to. I have been criticized for cheering for the Bruins in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals against the Canucks. An aunt called me a traitor – that could have been a joke, but I felt hurt and insulted.

I am a first / second-generation Canadian and my grandfathers could have chosen to go anywhere, but chose Saskatchewan as a place to settle and have a family. Believe it or not, there are many in my family who would be greatly offended if I chose to live in England, Denmark or the States. It would not be Canadian. Oh, it is OK to come here, but to go elsewhere be damned!

Richard mentioned that if I was to be offered a dream job in another country, he would drop everything and move. Sure, our families will be a bit upset, but our happiness is not necessarily based in Regina, Saskatoon, Tisdale or Waldheim. Granted, leaving would be rather difficult on a health perspective, but the thought of going to another place completely is not far out of my mind.

I do, and always will, call Canada the place I am from. My home, for the time being, is Waldheim.

It could be the fault of Noel Fielding, Stephen Fry and Jimmy Carr – ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’, ‘QI’ and ‘8 Out of 10 Cats’ make the UK funny sounding.

Keep the small window to another world always open, as you never know where the openness will lead you.
